![]() It’s most effective when it offers commentary on real issues, like our own politicians’ inability to come together and solve life-threatening crises in a timely manner. It’s a surprisingly rich science-fiction tale loaded with history and world-building. The game follows a runner named Rei as she travels around the decaying planet slaying giant monsters, which will allow her to use the Starseed. While the world’s government proves useless in stopping it, a group of people called Voidrunners are deployed to activate the Starseed, a device capable of stopping a black hole. A massive black hole appears near a planet and starts gradually ripping it apart. Solar Ash’s world may look brightly colored, but its story is darkly apocalyptic. It’s a momentum-filled indie game that’s always moving, even though it skates past some finer details in the process. The fluid cloud-skating movement is just plain pleasurable, while towering bosses provide unforgettable set pieces that put speed and reaction time to the test. In that regard, Solar Ash is a successful experiment that bubbles to life with vibrant colors and unmatched style.įilled with memorable sequences, Solar Ash is a focused follow-up to Hyper Light Drifter that constantly inspires moments of awe. Sometimes, the fun of video game development comes from the digital alchemy that occurs when developers start to mix beakers. Its gargantuan boss fights bring Shadow of the Colossus to mind, while the reality-bending space exploration calls back to Super Mario Galaxy. ![]() Fitbit Versa 3ĭeveloped by Heart Machine, the studio behind indie hit Hyper Light Drifter, several elements of Solar Ash will seem familiar at first glance. ![]() But it’s most obvious when putting black on such a pale wood like ash - white specs will stand out amid a black dyed board. That’s due to the surface tension of the liquid, it doesn’t matter what color. You’ll see little specs of wood peeking through, but they’ll be deep in the pores. After you apply the dye and take a close look at your piece, you’ll see that the dye just doesn’t reach down deep into the pores. Like all dye on open grained woods, there does remain one small problem. It doesn’t raise grain and it’s solid black. The Solar-Lux Jet Black dye turns out to be a good answer to these troubles. The trouble with mixing your own black dye for ebonizing wood is that it often comes out too gray, or sometimes blueish. Unlike dyes that you mix yourself, Solar-Lux is a premixed alcohol based dye. Using a jet black dye, in this case Jet Black dye from Solar-Lux, is another fine choice and it’s the product I’ve chosen to use in the demonstration video above. The only problem is it’s waterbased so it will raise the grain and therefore requires some extra care in order to get a good smooth wood finish. You get a solid black color in about 3 coats. Waterproof India ink, however, will work and it’s a good option. The iron ions that result from the reaction of mixing the steel with the acid (vinegar) will react with tannic acid found in some woods, such as oak, and that reaction makes the wood turn black. A home chemistry experiment might be fun, but sadly, it’s an exercise that won’t work well on ash. If you were to do what everybody does when they want to learn about something - that is go to Google and pluck out a search - you’ll find some legends and fables about using various home-brew remedies like a solution of vinegar and steel wool. Black India ink is a good choice because it comes out perfectly black with about 3 coats.
